At the 2016 URMIA Annual Conference in San Diego, President Kathy Hargis asked the affiliate members in attendance at the All Affiliates meeting to consider other benefits URMIA could offer to add value to our affiliate membership category. One suggestion included offering continuing education credits at our conferences. URMIA's Affiliates Committee has developed a summary of some of the continuing education options for higher education risk management and insurance professionals that we would like to share in this month's Insights for all members.

Five years ago, the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) launched its Higher Education Compliance Alliance (HECA). Its goal: to provide a centralized repository of resources to assist institutions of higher education in their compliance efforts. Thanks to URMIA's Government and Regulatory Affairs Committee and our commitment to providing the best resources available to our members, URMIA served as a founding partner association. Having reached the five-year anniversary of the Alliance and its website, NACUA now has 30 partner associations. The URMIA Sports Camp Insurance Program (SCIP) was soft launched in 2016 and is now in full swing! SCIP provides low-cost, best-in-class, sports-specific insurance to sports camp programs for minors that are conducted in college or university facilities. This insurance program protects the sports camp, its coaches and counselors, and the college or university venue where the camp is held against claims by individuals who could be injured as a result of participating in the camp. In addition, campers are covered with an Excess Accident Medical Policy for medical bills related to accidents that occur at the camp. - URMIA's Suggested Reading List, URMIA. Shared in February 2017, our suggested reading list is intended to provide guidance for higher education risk managers. The current version can be downloaded here. It can also be accessed on the URMIAnetwork's URMIA Resource Guide under Table of Contents. URMIA appreciates the suggestions received for this list. It will be updated biannually, based in part on feedback from our members. Meanwhile, if you have comments or suggestions, please email them to resources@urmia.org.
- "The Changing Culture of Marijuana," URMIA 2016 Annual Conference, Jane Rosenthal and Thomas Lyons, Colorado School of Mines, and Richard Spiers, Genesis Risk Management and Insurance Services. Last November, several states legalized recreational use of marijuana. This presentation walks risk managers through some of the implications of marijuana legalization. Additionally, Occupational Health and Safety hosted a free webinar, "The ‘High’ Risk of Marijuana," on March 8, 2017.
- "Managing Volunteers on Campus," URMIA Risk Management Week presentation and supporting documentation. As a follow-up to East Carolina's presentation on managing volunteers on campus for URMIA's 2016 Risk Management Week, East Carolina's Volunteer Regulation and Volunteer Agreement have been posted to the URMIA Library.
- EduRisk podcasts, United Educators (UE). EduRisk from UE provides resources to help prevent incidents that put people and institutions at risk. Listen to advice from UE and other experts on how to protect students, staff and faculty at your school, college or university. From trends in accident investigation to handling sexual misconduct in independent schools, United Educators' (UE) podcasts, available in iTunes, cover a wide variety of risks facing institutions of higher education.
