The Biggert-Waters Act of 2012 and Impacts on Flood Insurance Policies

The Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 (BW-12) is a law passed by Congress and signed by the President in 2012 that extends the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for five years, while requiring significant program reform. This article provides an overview of the Act, as well as potential impacts to higher education and NFIP policies.

As part of my role as URMIA's president-elect, I have the privilege of being the liaison from the URMIA Board of Directors to the Affiliates Committee. This committee is made up of one of our most important member types. Our affiliates are not simply our service providers and the financial sponsors of URMIA's many initiatives: they are true supporters of URMIA and are dedicated to the development of our Institutional Members and the success of the organization. The committee is being chaired for the second year by Jane Dickerson, senior vice president at Risk Strategies Company and one of URMIA's biggest champions, and she is joined by a group of members who are equally tireless, supportive, and, frankly, just plain fun to be around!
