URMIA hosts elections annually to select a new president-elect and a specific number of board of directors members based on the director positions whose terms are expiring. Occasionally, as is the case in 2024, the organization also asks its voting members to approve specific amendments to its bylaws – URMIA’s regulations for operations.

Each URMIA member organization has one voting member – the person eligible to vote on the organization’s behalf unless a proxy is named. More on proxies below.

What Voting Members Will Decide in 2024

  • Elect a president-elect who will serve as president after a year in the president-elect role

  • Elect three board of directors members who are from institutional members and will start a three-year term on the board at the 55th Annual Conference in New Orleans

  • Elect one board of directors member who is from an affiliate member and will start a three-year term on the board at the 55th Annual Conference in New Orleans

  • Vote yes/no on approval of bylaws amendments

Bylaws Amendments

There are amendments to the current URMIA bylaws that voting members are being asked to approve. A complete, updated version of the URMIA bylaws with all the changes incorporated, should they be approved, can be viewed here.

A summary of the proposed amendments is in the table below.

Area of Bylaws Impacted Description of Change Rationale for Change
Affiliate Membership Allowing organizations with the same parent company to choose whether to have separate or combined URMIA memberships Some companies that are under a parent company are not related, may not offer the same type of services to risk managers, and may not even know one another. Providing the option for separate memberships will allow some flexibility to determine what is best for all parties.
Institutional System Membership Adding clarifying language to the definition of an institutional system member that states groups established for the intent of risk management or insurance are eligible for this type of membership Provides better clarity that groups must be formed for risk management and insurance purposes to be eligible for this type of membership
Board of Directors Members’ Qualifications and Eligibility Better defines who can serve on URMIA’s Board of Directors and for how long Provides clarity around the eligibility requirements for serving on the organization’s governing body
Throughout Bylaws Editorial changes addressing today’s cultural norms and technological options Keep up with changing times and technologies (examples: removing facsimile as an official method of submission/communication, being more gender inclusive with pronouns)

Vote By Proxy

An URMIA voting member may choose to name a proxy to vote on their behalf in the URMIA election for 2024. Reasons for naming a proxy could include, but are not limited to:

  • Someone else on the URMIA membership roster for your organization is more involved with URMIA and/or has a better knowledge of the candidates and URMIA’s structure, mission, etc.

  • You will not be available during the election period to review the information and cast a vote

A voting member may name a proxy for their vote by completing this form and URMIA will transfer your vote to the designated proxy.
